On 27th October 2011 SEQUOIA team will be at the 1st FISE-WG Workshop: How Disruptive Technologies Influence the FI Business Ecosystem collocated with the Future Internet Assembly, Poznan, Poland.

The workshop is an opportunity to explore techniques for analysing FI ecosystems, how impact is achieved and what are the emerging considering for design and experimentation.

On 27th April SEQUOIA launched the second questionnaire.  Though this questionnaire all cooperating projects are going to start assessing their project potential socio-economic impact. How? The SEQUOIA team will take the data provided by the collaborating projects and will elaborate it following the SEQUOIA methodology. The preliminary results will  then be presented to the projects for validation. SEQUOIA focuses on self-assessment and, in order to develop a methodological tool sensitive to project’s characteristics, it collects feedback from the collaborating projects during the whole assessment exercise.

On 22nd February the SEQUOIA 4th focus group took place. The session focused mainly on the “social impacts” of the projects. This is one of the most difficult aspects of impact assessment for ICT research projects. The projects participating to the focus group, IRMOS, OPEN, PERSIST, SHAPE (Call 1) and SOCIETIES, SERENOA (Call 5), took part in an interesting discussion on how research projects often do not provide direct solutions for end-users or businesses in some specific sectors but may be considered as 'enablers of innovative solutions''  in line with their research nature. The effective impact at social level will depend on which services will be created and developed further on thanks to the projects’ results.

The third focus group started with a short presentation of the participating projects and of their expectations regarding SEQUOIA. The projects participating were CHOREOS, I2WEB, OPTIMIS, REMICS (Call 5). During the discussion it arose that evaluation of socio-economic impact is perceived as an important but at the same time difficult task to accomplish. Most of the projects participating to the focus group are counting on SEQUOIA  to help them develop a long term assessment process.

SEQUOIA first focus groups took place on 14th and 16th of February.
ACSI, FITTEST, SOCIOS, VISION CLOUD, HOLA, DIVA, Q-IMPRESS, S-CUBE, OMELETTE, WEBINOS projects actively participated to the focus groups giving SEQUOIA the opportunity to learn more about project's needs and expectations regarding socio-economic impact assessment.

During the 2nd focus group (16th February)  the need for tools to assess the socio-economic impact of research projects came out very clear. The tools should also make the identification and assessment of the socio-economic impact, a process perceived as difficult to perform, an easier task to accomplish. The focus group saw the participation of Call 1 projects (DIVA, Q-IMPRESS, S-CUBE) and Call 5 projects (OMELETTE, WEBINOS) with different expectations. Call 1 project , being near to their project end, expressed the need for a framework to support project’s impact assessment after the end of the project itself, while Call 5 projects highlighted the importance to put in place an assessment methodology since the beginning of the project lifetime.

On 6th October 2011, The European Commission's Directorates Joint Researimpact ch Centre (JRC) and Research (RTD) jointly organise the 3rd European Conference on Corporate R&D (CONCORD-2011). The dynamics of Europe's industrial structure and the growth of innovative firm.

SEQUOIA is going to perform 5 focus groups between the 14th and the 26th February. The focus groups will see the participation of the projects cooperating with SEQUOIA to perform their impact assessment. During the focus groups project representatives will be encourages to share, and to compare opinions and experiences.

SEQUOIA team participated in interactive brainstorming with the HOLA! project and other participants to work jointly on the identification of dissemination needs from the projects and determine concrete services to increase the impact of FP R&D in the area of Internet of Services so as to help the projects maximise the future use of knowledge and exploitation of results.

Part of our remit in the SEQUOIA project is to ensure that we establish and maintain meaningful linkages to other EU projects investigating the same domain and also with EU Commission representatives.

SEQUOIA will be at the next Collaboration Meeting which will take place on 19-20 October in Brussels (Diamant Conference Centre, Bd Reyers 80).

SEQUOIA celebrated the start of its activities in Rome on the 5th May 2010. The kick of meeting was a fruitful, collaborative and very interesting meeting which gave the SEQUOIA team the opportunity to put together ideas and start its activities.
